Two more days in Fort Collins after my last post were fairly uneventful, but relaxing. Then, Mike and I departed CO early Wednesday morning, driving around the clock. On the way through Kansas, we saw a billboard that had amused us last year, so this time we got a photo of it.
I just don't understand it. Perhaps you can provide some insight? Based on this sign, we can assume 2 things;
1. These folks know the universe well enough to know that nowhere on Earth or beyond is there a more friendly yarn store, other than one.
2. That one yarn store that is friendlier is so friendly, that these folks don't dare to claim to be the friendliest.
As we made our way through the remainder of the 17 states I would eventually pass through on my way to North Carolina, we played the game we had created last year to help pass the time in the car. (and we stopped for some barbecue in Kansas City)
Our game is "6 degrees of iPod Shuffle". It's simple, we put my iPod on shuffle all songs, and let it go. After the first song finishes, and the second song begins, we try to connect the artist from the second song to the one from the first song in as few steps as possible. For example, if Ben Harper came on, followed by The Beatles we would connect them thusly:
Ben Harper performed with Cindy Lauper on her VH1 special, Cindy Lauper performed on "We are the World" with Michael Jackson, who did several duets with Paul McCartney of The Beatles.
It was fun, and very challenging, especially considering the amount of my own music I have on my iPod. Believe it or not, I can connect myself to most famous artists fairly easily, though.
Day two of the marathon drive began with a lovely misty morning in Kentucky.
We finally arrived in Greensboro in the mid-afternoon on Thursday. Mike and I each went to our respective mothers' houses for the night. Then, early on Friday morning, after being treated to my mother's famous breakfast pizza, we embarked once again for Wilmington. In Wilmington, we explored and obtained relocation information for Mike, who's relatively certain that he wants to move there at the end of the year. Then, we met up with our good buddy and former booninite, Krysti Wetherill, who fed us yummy homemade pizza and showed us around the nightlife of Wilmington. After hours of bar-hopping and hilarity, we finally collapsed into sleep, and after breakfast out with the Wetherill's, we covered the last 45 miles or so to Sunset Beach. Since Allan and the Mitchells had to pick up Josh, Reuben and Colette from the airport in Myrtle Beach, Mike and I arrived first. The realtor gave us the keys and we finally unloaded my poor car, which is by now completely encrusted with dead bugs and dust from the 3200 miles I've covered up to this point. The first evening together was spent hunting for a restaurant that wasn't over-crowded, and shopping for groceries and supplies for the week. A fun meal of seafood and steak did the trick Saturday night, while Sunday morning treated us to Big Nell's Pit Stop, which is just up the road from the aforementioned Beaches that we so loved last year.
I spent a huge portion of Sunday wrestling with my PC, which I have brought to be the main system for recording our album this year. I was about ready to drop it off the deck and then toss it into the channel. With Chris's help, I finally got it working. Sunday night's highlight was Colette's famous Gumbo.
Man, was that Gumbo good. Today was homemade biscuits (by Darby) for breakfast, then frolicking on the beach with Josh's family. That catches us up to the present. More Later!
